Terpenes are found in the essential oils of plants, especially in flowers. These small organic compounds are what contribute to the flavors, aromas, and even the color of the flowers. Essential oils are key components that are commonly used for fragrances and even medicinal purposes. Aromatherapy also uses essential oils to elicit healing responses in the body.

In 2011, a report was published by Dr. Ethan Russo in the British Journal of Pharmacology. The report relayed information pertaining to the benefits and therapeutic attributes of several terpenoids. This included several of the aromatic compounds that are commonly found in popular strains of cannabis. A few of the most prominent are:

  • Alpha-pinene – Also known as essential pine oil, alpha-pinene is commonly found in cannabis and is considered the most common of all terpenes within the plant world. It has benefits as a bronchodilator, memory enhancer, and promotes alertness.
  • Myrcene – Myrcene is also commonly found in cannabis and acts as a sedative, hypnotic, pain reliever, anti-inflammatory, and muscle relaxant.
  • Limonene – Along with being found in cannabis, limonene is also a major terpene in citrus fruits. It is capable of dissolving gallstones, improving a person’s mood, and relieving gastrointestinal issues like acid reflux and heartburn. It also has many different cancer-fighting effects.

In Dr. Russo’s report, he claims that terpenes offer specific effects that are therapeutic in nature and that may offer benefits when found in cannabis-based extracts that are used for medicinal purposes.
